Around the country, and at many Minnesota law firms, web site publishing has suddenly become serious business.

Anything that has become serious business deserves careful study. That's why we decided to find out which Minnesota law firm web pages people visit most.

Our investigation represents a logical extension of our Directory of Minnesota Law Firms on the Web, increasingly recognized as the Web's definitive collection of links to Minnesota law firm web sites. We include firms headquartered in Minnesota as well as firms headquartered in other states that maintain offices in Minnesota.

We asked firms in our Directory to voluntarily report how many page views their home page received in January 1999. We also asked firms to report page view numbers for up to three additional frequently visited interior pages.

We are pleased that an excellent, representative sample of firms participated, ranging from several of the state's largest firms to many solo practitioners.

Of course, as in every survey, some firms chose not to participate. Some did not have the requested data. One expressed concern that firms might inconsistently report, skewing the rankings.

For the record, we asked firms to supply individual "page view" counts -- not "hits" or "user sessions." We did not ask for measures of overall site activity because we wanted to identify the most popular pages, the ones you just might be interested in visiting yourself if you are looking for legal information on our part of the Web.

When we thought it appropriate, we raised follow-up questions with firms about the origin and exact description of the figures they reported. On those occasions when we asked for clarifications, participating firms were highly cooperative.

While the survey is dependent on accurate self-reporting, we are pleased to publish these, first ever, benchmark web traffic rankings gathered from Minnesota law firms.

We report ranked results in two classes: (a) large firms and (b) small firms/solo practitioners. (For this purpose, we defined large firms as those with more than twenty attorneys in all their offices.)

We report home page rankings for each class, then up to three interior pages for each participating firm in each class. We rank the top ten, then list other honorable mention pages that are worth checking out as well.

All rankings are based on information voluntarily reported by law firms for visits to the individual pages listed above during the month of January, 1999. Other law firms might have have been eligible for inclusion in these rankings but did not respond or declined to participate.
